Powder Coating: Protecting Metal Features Indoors and Outdoors
One of the services that Decron provides in addition to metal forming and fabrication is a powder coating finish. Like all of our services, this is provided in-house and by our expert team, saving our customers the time and resources it would take to outsource the operation to another company while ensuring consistent quality with every project. Powder coatings are especially ideal for the markets we serve, protecting the metal components that we fabricate from regular wear and tear whether used indoors or out.
What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is a popular dry-finishing process that can be used on a wide array of products. They’re typically based on polymer resin systems combined with other additives and pigments, and applied using a manual or automatic spray gun. Once the coating is applied, it’s heated in an oven until a hard, durable, and uniform shell has formed around the part. Due to the heat, the resin that makes up the coating reacts to produce a high cross-link density–meaning that it is far stronger and much more resistant to breakdown.
Why Powder Coating
Decron added powder coating to our arsenal of metal fabrication services not just because of its durability, but also its affordability. Powder coating is an excellent finish for everything from the most rugged machinery to household items. The finish is resistant to a wide range of environmental conditions, including varying temperatures, corrosive environments, strong impacts, and harsh UV rays.
Durability isn’t the only advantage that powder coating offers–it’s also an aesthetically pleasing finish as well. It can come in a wide variety of colors and textures, and is far more resistant to fading, scratching, and chipping compared to liquid paints. This makes it an excellent choice for metal components used in household items, or related interior products.
In addition, powder coatings tend to be far safer and more environmentally friendly than other types of finishes. They release no harmful volatile organic compound (VOCs) into their air during their application, and are not made from harsh or harmful chemicals. Between being relatively more cost effective than other types of finishes, powder coatings are an excellent way to protect many different metal components.
